General Information to help you enjoy
Currency: The Barbados dollar has a fixed relationship to the US dollar. US $1.00 is equal to Barbados $1.98, although most people exchange at 1 to 2. The US dollar is widely accepted throughout Barbados. Major credit cards are accepted in most stores and restaurants, as are travellers' cheques.
Bank Hours: Banks normally open from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. (Mon. – Thu) and 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. (Fri). ATM's are to be found throughout the West and South Coast tourist areas but are less frequently found in other areas of the island.
Store Hours: Stores normally open from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. or 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. (Mon. – Fri.) and 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 or 2.00 p.m. (Sat.). Most stores are closed on Sunday. The local supermarket in West Coast Mall is open 8.30 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. (Mon - Sat), and also on Sunday morning. The local petrol station shop stocks many basic items and is open for longer hours seven days a week.
Electricity: Power is 110 volt AC, 50 cycle, and sockets are compatible with electrical goods from USA and Canada. However, electric clocks will run slow being at 50 cycles rather than the 60 cycles of North America.
Time: Atlantic time, which is GMT minus four hours.
Calling Home: For long distance direct dialling calls to North America simply dial 1, the area code and the person’s telephone number. For calls to UK dial 011, the country code (44), the area code (excluding the 0) and the person’s telephone number.
Car Rental: Barbadians drive on the left of the road in right hand drive cars, as in the UK. You will need your national driving licence or an International Driving Permit. On production of this document a Barbados Driving Permit will be issued by your car hire company. One can also be obtained from the Barbados Licensing Authority. The cost is BD$10.00 for a Permit valid for two months.
